Hello there Celeste players! We are back with another Roman reveal blog.

As we develop the Romans, each week we will be revealing the Romans to you building by building, unit by unit, and technology by technology. We are not just showing you what the Romans will be, but showing you how we are building them, who is building them, and also why we are building them the way that we are.

This week, we are revealing the Auxilia Camp, which is the Romans’ second military production building. We are also introducing the Balearic Slinger, who is the first unit available at the Auxilia Camp. And finally, as widely requested, we are showing you the Roman Guard Tower, both in its initial Age 2 version and after its Age 3 upgrade.

Champion Mode Tech Tree

Hello there PvP players!

I'm glad to announce that we finally have a Tech Tree for Champion Mode! Here you can find all the changes to techs, the new techs, new unit stats that are only present in Champion Mode (PvP and Skirmish), the active maps in the Sparta Ranked ladder and additional info for those maps, alongside all the changes made to Champion Mode in Celeste.

This week we are revealing two Common Buildings, the Age 1 Town Center and the Market. As discussed in more detail in our Building Design blog, these Buildings are 2 of the 13 buildings included in every Age of Empires Online civilization by default and that always appear in a specific age. > Balance Team's Comment: Anti-Ranged Ranged units in Age III don't see as much play as we would like. We believe one major reason for this is that these units simply don't have enough Attack Range to be able to safely hit the enemy Ranged units without being torn to shreds by the opposing front line. We first gave extra range to the Norse Skirmisher and we saw that the increased range helped them quite a bit, so we are now treating the Greek Peltast and the Persian Takabara with the same change.​

Design Blog #1: Building Design Theory

Before we could build even one Roman building or unit, we had to decide what buildings and units they had. So we need to back up a bit to get you into our frame of mind.

We started by analyzing what everyone could agree on: the designs of the Original 6 civs. This week, we are going to start with buildings. In later weeks, we will perform a similar analysis with units and technologies. But for now, we are looking at just buildings.

Every civilization in AoEO has 18 buildings except the Norse (16). Looking deeper, we can see that every building falls into one of five categories: Common Buildings, Improved Buildings, Advanced Buildings, Custom Buildings, and Unique Buildings.

Overall, this analysis of the five categories of buildings forms a touchstone for how we as Developers approach civ design. Since it helps explain the design of the Original 6 civs, it also helps us design new civs (and help you predict where we are heading). In other words, if our Romans follow these rules...

Improving Connectivity with NAT-Punchthrough

Hello fellow AOEO players!

In the last couple of weeks we have been looking into how we could improve the connectivity between players. Given that all multiplayer games with the BANG Engine (AOM/AOE3/AOEO) are based on peer-to-peer the only way to currently play with each other is with the help of UPnP, port-forwarding or via a private VPN-System like Hamachi. Unfortunately UPnP doesn't always work and port-forwarding is a hassle to set up, especially for those who are not really tech-savvy.

We decided to look into how other platforms like Voobly, GameRanger or AOE3 work and deal with this issue. To give an understanding why those platform offer better connectivity than we do, we have to look what techniques/technologies are possible:

  • Manual port-forwarding (Can be used with Celeste)
  • UPnP (Can be used with Celeste)
  • Relay-Server
  • NAT-Punchthrough (Coming up!)

We are very excited to bring you the first new feature that is done completely from scratch by the Celeste Development Team, the Spartan Reforge.

What is the Spartan Reforge, you say?

As you know, most pieces of equipment in Age of Empires Online have varied stats. This means that when you find a piece of gear in loot chests, sometimes it can have lower stats than the item's base stats. Well, in case of legendary gear, you don't have to deal with that anymore! Now with the Spartan Forge, you can try your luck at getting better stats on your gear.

First, you go to the Sparta Region. Then you can find the Spartan Forge. Click on the building to open the Reforge menu. Drag and drop your item from your inventory. There you will see your item's Power Level, which is an indicator of how close your item is towards its maximum possible stats...

Hello fellow AoEO players!

We are excited to tell you that the long awaited Legendary Craftables are almost upon us and will go live with tomorrow's update!

As you can see on the infograph, the new Recipes can be found as Legendary Quest Rewards, the chests in The Elite Meet in Crete, and if you can spare the coin, even higher chances of finding them in Level 40 Moe's Chests. They cannot be found in guarded chests. This was done in order to discourage "farming" and encourage actively playing quests, especially with your friends!
