All my buttons are blank and there is no text of any kind.

My install is new. I am using windows 10.
So far I tried:
- carefully followed the install directions on Reddit.
- went through all the suggested updates.
-did a game scan several times. (and the "legacy" game scan)
-did NOT use the steam function in helpers.
-checked windows features and windows firewall under helpers. All of them are okay/fixed
-ran update. it says my version is current.

My antivirus is set to tell me if it blocks anything. No notices from it.

I also tried turning all the xbox apps back on, using the services tab of task manager. I had them shut down as they were causing some of my non-Microsoft games to glitch.

That had no effect either.

I tried installing the game editor.
There was no effect on the regular game.
The editor seems to run well though. It has all normal text and buttons as they should be.
I realized that the regular game is only showing two (blank) buttons on the main screen. There is no options button. I think the two I have are "start" and "exit".

Any help is appreciated.

Hi, I initially missed your reply to the old thread. My bad there! What languages are installed on your PC and which one is in use?

No problem. I am just happy for the help :)

I only have English installed on my PC.
I do set it to Canadian English when possible for regional spelling lists. That shouldn't impact it I hope?

I was able to blindly poke around and get into the first (tutorial?) scenario. I confirmed that there are no letters/text anywhere in game, including the menus like options. All blank.

Everything else appears to be working, but as it is all unlabeled, the game is not really playable.

Ok, try this:

Open a command prompt as administrator. (If you dont know how, google "How to open cmd as admin on (my windows version)")
Then, run this command:
sfc /scannow

That command checks for windows corruption. Also, do you use any antivirus/antimalware or any other program that influences/effects other applications?

I did the scan
"Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."

I use ESET Internet Security. It does not show any blocked programs in the troubleshooting wizard.

I had the file excluded before, but to be on the safe side, I redid the exclusion following the directions from the link you so graciously provided.

I excluded both the game file "/Age Of Empires Online" and the "/spartan" folder in documents. It is used by the game too?

Still no dice. The game remains naked of all words.

The folders you excluded will do perfectly. At least we can rule out the antivirus. (As long as you dont have any others of course)
In your initial post, you said that you "ran update". May I ask for clarification? What updates did you check for?

I am better at fixing hardware than software, but I am still working the problem:

Since the game editor functions properly, can we (I) compare the settings or files related to words between the game and the editor? Does the game just deploy fonts from windows or have its own font library?

I had the "xbox" apps disabled when I did my install. Could that have corrupted the install in a way that game scan cannot detect?

I meant that I ran the update on the Celeste Launcher.

I have Windows 10 up to date too; graphics driver (Nvidia) are current.

First off, the xbox app thing should have no effect on this situation.

What I'll do is redirect you to the "General Troubleshooting" section of the wiki. you can find that here

Once you are done with those, report back.

I went through the whole troubleshooting guide. Everything checks out until the last item.

I rebooted in safe mode with networking and the game runs normally. It is very slow and choppy, but I assume that is from safe mode.

"If the issue does not persist while in this mode, it is very likely that 3rd-party software or user settings are the cause to your issue."

So it is one of my other programs or my user settings. Is there a way to directly detect which one is the culprit or do I have to use trial and error?

So the text in-game is showing while in safe mode?

Correct. The text shows in-game when I run it in safe-mode.

Alright. Do this please; Open the command prompt (WIN + R, type cmd and hit enter.) then type the following command:

wmic product get name >> %userprofile%\Desktop\list.txt

This should generate a list of all of your programs within list.txt please copy/paste the contents of that file and paste it here.
wmic product get name >> %userprofile%\Desktop\list.txt
