Civ Selection Criteria for an 8th civ, which may never be designed

Do you understand that this thread is not suggesting we will ever make an 8th civ?

And because so-called Improved Buildings have just tiny changes, it seems much easier to justify having a second Improved Building of the same type than doubling up on a different category. A Stone mine or a gold-tricking Garden, for instance, would feel really derivative, particularly with so many open areas in other Buildings available.

Not necessarily. In a vacuum sure, but for a civ that a stone mine meshes well with, it could be very welcome. Not to mention if we continue to look at the vacuum then Stone Mines are merely a part of the total civ. The total civ has other features, possibly age up methods/prereqs and a unique military lineup that might overshadow the fact that yes, they have a stone version of the gold mine to the point that you would never mistake the civ for Celts. It isn't lazy design if it actually fits the civ very well.

I know I'm necroing an 8 week old thread but I fear for a world that doesn't blink an eye at the very real and wonderful prospect of an 8th or beyond civ. So I must keep the dream alive!

I expect we will eventually talk about choosing an 8th civ. That’s part of why I started this thread. We would never open the decision up to a public vote so it’s important to give players a place to be heard and present arguments for or against different civs. I know I’m always curious what people have in mind and why. I assume we’d narrow in on a small handful of possible civs and go from there.

Steppes civ please. I know Carthage is off the table, and so is Phonecians (unless the HNIC has changed his mind on this), so to me it's the most logical addition, considering East Asian and Americas civs are a continent away from the civs we have.

I mean eventually we could have India and Phoenicia. And possibly some civs most of you don't think much of but were big hits in AoE1 such as Hittites or Choson once the map gets big enough.

The other 2 alliance leagues are Egyptian and Greek places. Yet they're also playable civs?
Hmm, I think this gives a reason to consider the Carthago/Phoenecian civ even more.
Personally, I would prefer India to be the next civ to go more deeper into Asia and to go for a more distant civ.

We know what the Phoenician architecture was to be, and it was very different than what ended up in Carthage. So I could see leaving the Alliance of Carthage alone and creating the Phoenicians as a separate entity. This would be consistent with the Greek/Delos and Egyptian/Imohotep situation.

Yes, if we ever made the Phoenicians, that would be our hook into the Punic Wars and the Carthaginian empire, so we would want to include Carthaginian units.

Hannibal isn’t the only part of the whole of the Lebanon legacy: Hiram, Pygmalion, Dido, Hasdurbal and Halmicar to name a few could easily serve the Phoenician storyline

Yes. I did not mean to suggest the only reason to make them would be for the Punic Wars. It’s just that those wars are one of the most requested questlines for the Romans, so we’d definitely want that crossover. The Phoenicians would be a very fun civ to build and would provide us with a unique set of challenges. They expanded quickly through overseas trade, commerce, and colonies. And they are not nearly as well known as most civs in the game. Hyping the Phoenicians for one to two years of development is certainly possible but much it would need to include a lot more introduction to players about who they were than most civs, especially the Romans.
