I think if they could officially publish Project Celeste on a storefront then they would have done it already.
As far as I understand, the current number of active players is not very small, but it will be very good to be published on a platform like epic games.
The best way they can do to get more players currently is to make a referral program, where you can invite your friends and both of you get rewards for playing and streaming rewards (for watching and streaming the game).
But this would probably not happen, more players means they would need better servers and with this they need more financial support. And without a option to sell anything this is quite the problem. While the donation button exist, it's not a a efficient way, because many players don't love to give money in exchange for nothing.
