I wish I could understand how armor increases at each upgrade and how much it affects when you have a gear on a unit.

Taking some examples:
Cataphract fully upgraded has 0.42 pierce armor and its champion upgrade (+50% pierce armor) updates them to 0.61.
A Woad Raider with that legendary sword that give 17% melee infantry armor and one melee research updates them to 0.28

How its calculated and is it possible to foreseen the increase? I use the unit.stats anyway but at least Age of Mythology armor improvements made more sense.

How to calculate armor

armor = 1 - A / B

A = 1 - base armor
B = 1 + armor value from upgrade

Example:

Unit with 0.2 base pierce armor receives an upgrade that gives 30 % more pierce armor

armor = 1 - (1 - 0.2)/(1 + 0.3) = 0.3846

Many thanks pf2k, I already knew by rule of thumb how many vills speed up the construction but this remained as incognita.

Even though the numbers can be weird, each piece of armor gives a full effect. So if you had 0 armor and added a 20% armor item, that units effective health/survivability would be 20% more. If the same unit had really high armor, say like 0.7 and you added a new 20% armor piece, the number might only go from 0.7 to 0.75, but they would still be getting a 20% increase in their effective health/survivability.

More or less

I like to think of it as nullifying a damage increase.

So a toxotes that has Barbed Arrows (1st pierce damage upgrade) researched will do +20% more damage to a spearman. But if that spearman gets Shield Rim (1st pierce armor upgrade, "+20% pierce armor"), toxotes is back to doing the same damage as before. That's how the math works out

I don't know how ignore armor makes part of the formula but anyway... Always good to understand the maths behind the game. Even with help of tools that foresee all possibilities with advisors, gears and techs.
