Anyway to sell/remove starting gear?

I'd like to clean up my inventory as i replace my starting equipment on my units, just started norse lv 20... says cant be traded or sold... why not, as to be a way? really didn't like this about the game back in 2012..

You can destroy the gear by dragging the gear out of the inventory and dropping it in the middle of the screen.

I think this otherwise very annoying requirement that we must destroy starting gear was put in place as some kind of measure to prevent people grinding coins by selling all that gear and then immediately restarting the civ and doing it again. It's annoying, but at least it ends eventually.
